Does Everyone Need a BHAG?

A BHAG? Say what? Maybe you aren’t familiar with this particular alphabet soup. Let me translate. BHAG = Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal (pronounced BEE-hag).

At our Dare 2 Share (D2S) office in Colorado, the following words are prominently displayed on our entrance wall. They greet us every day as we come in to work.

Attempt something so great for God, it’s doomed to failure unless God be in it.
—John Haggai

Dare 2 Share’s BHAG

There’s no doubt about it, our BHAG at D2S is audacious: To mobilize students on every high school and middle school campus in America to make disciples who make disciples. We want every teenager to hear the gospel from another teenager they know and trust.

We fully realize that this audacious goal is impossible, unless God is in it. We also acknowledge that we need others working alongside us. That’s why we’re so encouraged that thousands of youth leaders and dozens of other great para-church ministries are also at work helping young people become disciples who make disciples.

So What’s Your BHAG?

Does everyone need a BHAG? Well, consider this. Jesus gave one to His followers:

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you…(Matthew 28:19-20).

I’d encourage you to prayerfully consider establishing your own ministry-specific BHAG. Perhaps it might go something like this: To mobilize students on every school campus in our community to make disciples who make disciples, so that every teenager will have the chance to hear the gospel explained to them by another teenager they know and trust. (Obviously, I think this would be a great BHAG for your ministry to consider—since it so nicely dovetails with ours!) But whatever specific goal you personally, prayerfully formulate, keep in mind Jesus’ words in Matthew 28, calling all of us to share the gospel and make disciples.

Share 6: A Movement of Gospel Conversations

While our BHAG drives all we do at Dare 2 Share, we’re also passionate about helping you along the road to achieving yours. Fortunately, those dual passions generally mesh together well. Particularly so in the case of this next FREE D2S resource I want to tell you about—The Share 6 Campaign.

Share 6 is a movement of gospel conversations. It’s designed to inspire, equip and deploy Christian teenagers to engage their friends in spiritual conversations. Through the Share 6 Campaign, Dare 2 Share is giving youth leaders or concerned adults 100 FREE copies of the visually engaging outreach book, Life in 6 Words. We want students to prayerfully give the books away to their unreached friends as a spiritual conversation-starter. Click here to download a preview of the book, which is based on the popular YouTube video of the same name.

If you’ve already received your first free 100 books, call your D2S Ministry Advocate at 866.448.0270 to request more!

One Youth Leader’s Experience

I’m convinced that the frontlines perspective of another youth leader is one of the best ways to encourage you to take advantage of these free books. So check out what youth leader Andy McGowan has to say…

Not only are my teenagers giving the free Life in 6 Words books to their friends, they are having deeper, longer, and more frequent conversations with their friends as a result! These books are great for getting teens to share their faith. The books are CONCISE enough to keep a teen’s attention, COMPLETE enough to fully explain the whole story of the gospel and COOL enough for my teenagers to unashamedly pass them on to their friends.

Here are some examples of my students’ experiences:

“I gave Life in 6 Words to my friend today…and we had a really good DEEP conversation.  He is having a lot of trouble with believing right now…but he is coming to youth group on Sunday, so it went really well!” -Ethan

“I gave the book to my friend and she is coming to youth group on Sunday!”-Elana

“I gave Life in 6 Words to my atheist friend…He read it and said the pics were cool, but he didn’t agree with the message.” – Nathan

“When the challenge was issued and we prayed, a friend popped into my head. I gave him the book…he is really close to accepting Christ.” – Aaron

“I gave Life in 6 Words to my friend and he read it and received Jesus at school!” -Jonathan

Because this effort is soaked in prayer and my teens are actually using the books, my youth group has already seen growth and I anticipate further growth in the weeks and months to come with new believers! After all, it’s not about making converts, but making disciples!”

See You at the Pole

Of course you’re free to time the use of these books in whatever way works best for your youth group, but here’s one idea you might consider.

Since See You at the Pole (SYATP), this once a year event, already generates Christian “buzz” on school campuses across the country, consider requesting 100 FREE Life in 6 Words outreach books for your students to give to their unreached friends in the days surrounding SYATP.

What better way for Christian teenagers to put feet to their prayers for their school than to share the gospel with their friends who needs Jesus?

Identify your BHAG! Then get started attempting “something so great for God, it’s doomed to failure unless God be in it.”
