Don't Disappear Gospel Advancing Summer Break

Summer break often feels like a reset button for students and youth ministries. That’s natural. But Gospel Advancing ministry was never meant to stop when summer vacation starts.

If you’ve spent the last semester training students to pray, care, and share the Gospel relationally with their friends, summer can be one of the most strategic seasons of the year.

So, how can you keep your students advancing the Gospel over summer break? I’m glad you asked!

Don’t disappear from their lives.

During the school year, you’ve helped students build Gospel fluency. You’ve modeled relational evangelism, celebrated stories of courageous faith, and already trained them, now keep cheering them on.

Remember that one of the core principles of Gospel Advancing ministry is that leaders should model the Gospel Advancing lifestyle for their students. Teens notice how we live far more than what we say.

Over the summer, modeling this lifestyle can be as easy as sharing a quick story about a conversation you had with a neighbor, a moment when you prayed for someone at work (if you’re a bi-vocational leader), or an opportunity you missed. Make sure to share what you learned. Sometimes our “failures” are more inspiring to our students than anything else!

A short text, group message, or video sharing, “Here’s how I tried to live on mission this week,” gives students permission to do the same. It keeps Gospel conversations normal in their minds, even when they aren’t gathering regularly.

The goal isn’t to impress students. It’s to remind them that following Jesus includes everyday faithfulness, all year long.

Over the summer, you’ll want some free time of your own. So, here’s a pro tip: Schedule a few encouraging text messages ahead of time. You don’t need to send long devotionals. Just plan a simple message like this:

Praying for you this week. Ask God to give you one Gospel conversation today. He loves to answer that prayer.

Don’t let the mission disappear from their lives.

Students are around friends more often in the summer, at jobs, practice, camps, and late‑night hangouts. Those moments are ripe for Gospel conversations. Here’s a short reminder from you before summer break that can help students keep that vision front and center.

You could plan a contest for when they return in the fall. Whoever has more Gospel conversations during the summer break wins a prize. It doesn’t have to be expensive — maybe a gift card from their favorite restaurant.

Many students will attend camps, mission trips, or vacations during the summer. Some will go with your church. Others won’t. Either way, you can help them frame those experiences through a Gospel Advancing lens.

Before they go, ask simple questions like:

  • Who are you praying for during that time?
  • How can you care well for someone who doesn’t know Jesus there?
  • What might it look like to share your faith naturally during that time?

Don’t forget to follow up.

Follow up after they return. Ask what conversations they had, not just how much fun the trip was. This helps students see these special spiritual experiences as launchpads for mission, not emotional moments that fade by fall.

I pray that if you or your church is planning a summer experience, Gospel Advancing is already baked into it.

By the way, if you’re looking for a summer experience that builds long‑term momentum instead of a temporary high, Lead THE Cause is designed to do exactly that. Lead THE Cause is a one-week summer camp alternative where youth groups spend an intensive week praying, learning, and brainstorming together to reach their community for Christ. They experience deep prayer moments, faith-sharing opportunities, and vision planning.

This powerful week really flips the switch within the hearts and minds of students. It changes youth ministry culture from teens being the consumers to the creators of ministry opportunities.

What if I’m new to Gospel Advancing?

In that case, you’re out of luck — I don’t know what to tell you. I’m kidding!

Is never too late to start! You still have a couple of weeks to get your group ready for a Gospel Advancing summer. We have tons of free resources to help you do just that.

You can plan a half-day to a full-day training experience to get them ready to engage their world during the break. I would recommend that you check out our customizable video-based event curriculum, Be Like Jesus.  This curriculum helps youth pastors activate their students to pray for, care for, and clearly share the Gospel with the people in their lives, just as Jesus did. Unlike other programs that only discuss evangelism, Be Like Jesus allows students to put their training into practice right away through conversation-based outreach.

If you have a little more time, you can check one of our other curricula that will guarantee your students are inspired and equipped with the Gospel message.

You don’t need to add more programming.

You just need to stay present.

Staying connected, modeling faithfulness, and giving students simple encouragement helps reinforce what you’ve already been building all year.

Quick check-ins, texts, stories, prayers, and a clear vision can keep students advancing the Gospel until everyone regathers in the fall, ready to continue what God has already started.
