Esteban is the Executive and Creative Director of Streetlights, a ministry on mission to “Unfold God’s word, so all can understand.” Streetlights creates multimedia resources that make Scripture accessible and understandable to youth in urban cultures around the world. Their resources include audio Bible books in various languages, curriculum, videos, and the Streetlights app.
Following the Ancient Footsteps of Teaching God’s Word
Getting God’s word into the hands of the lost is incredibly needed in today’s dark world. Society tells people to base their worldviews and life decisions on what feels right, but feelings change. As Christ-followers, we have the duty to tell the world that they can base their lives on something that never changes or fails—the word of God. Romans 10:17 says, “So, faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” When it comes to sharing the gospel, God’s word is the most important resource we can point people to!
The book of Nehemiah has a beautiful example of the importance of teaching God’s word in desperate times. In 445 B.C., under the leadership of Nehemiah, the Israelites worked hard to rebuild the destroyed wall of Jerusalem. They faced crazy obstacles and opposition from outsiders as they worked, but God was with them. They finished the entire wall in just fifty-two days!
When the work was done, the people gathered and read the Law aloud. Nehemiah 8:7-8 says, “…the Levites helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.”
After years of living in exile, the Israelites needed to know God’s promises to move forward as a nation. God called the Levites to step in to help everyone understand the word. Today, almost 2,500 years later, it’s incredible to see God calling people like Esteban to carry on the torch of clearly teaching the word!
