Fear Is the Wall Students Face
Ask any teenager why they don’t share their faith, and fear usually rises to the top. Fear of rejection. Fear of saying the wrong thing. Fear of losing friends. For many, evangelism feels like an impossible hurdle. That’s why the Energize Youth Ministry Conference exists: to equip youth pastors with the tools to help their students face those fears and find confidence in the Gospel.

What Students Are Really Afraid Of
On the surface, evangelism fear looks like nerves. Underneath, it’s usually something deeper. Some students doubt they know enough about Scripture. Others wonder if their friends will laugh or walk away. Still others quietly ask, “What if I mess this up and make things worse?”
Those fears are not signs of weakness; they’re human. And unless leaders address them honestly, students will stay silent.
A Story of Courage
One high schooler, Tyler, admitted to his small group that he was terrified of sharing Jesus with his best friend. “What if he thinks I’m weird?” he asked. His youth pastor challenged him to simply pray for courage and then ask his friend one question: “Do you ever think about God?” Tyler finally tried, stumbling through the words. To his shock, his friend responded, “I’ve actually been wanting to talk about that.”
What Tyler thought would ruin the friendship opened a door. His story became proof for the rest of the group: fear doesn’t have to win.Why Fear Has So Much Power
Fear thrives in silence. When students feel alone in their struggles, the fear grows. But when leaders create a space to name those fears, something powerful happens. Students realize they’re not the only ones. That simple realization can be liberating.
The Generation in Reach study found that students in Gospel Advancing ministries report far more confidence in sharing their faith. Why? Because those ministries normalize the conversation. They regularly talk about fears, celebrate small attempts, and remind students that evangelism is not about perfection but about faithfulness.
Paul put it this way in 1 Corinthians 2:3–5, “I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling… so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.” Even the boldest evangelists began afraid, but God’s power worked through their weakness.
Fear also loses power when students are trained. Confidence comes from practice, from role-playing conversations, and from watching leaders model what it looks like. A student who has rehearsed how to answer, “Why do you believe in God?” will step into the moment with far less hesitation than one who has never thought about it.

Practical Coaching for Youth Pastors
Helping students overcome fear requires patience and intentionality. Here are a few ways youth pastors can build confidence:
- Name the fear out loud. Ask students to share what intimidates them about evangelism. Let them see they are not alone.
- Celebrate small wins. A student who simply starts a spiritual conversation should be affirmed as much as someone who sees a friend come to Christ.
- Equip with tools. Provide students with simple conversation starters and short Gospel explanations they can memorize.
- Model vulnerability. Share your own stories of fear and how God worked through you despite them. Students will realize they don’t have to be fearless to be faithful.
When Fear Becomes Fuel
The truth is, fear doesn’t always disappear. But that isn’t a failure — it can be a sign that students care deeply about the outcome. When they learn to step out anyway, relying on God’s strength instead of their own, fear becomes fuel for faith. That transformation is exactly what youth pastors long to see.
