Barbara Higgins draws from more than 45 years of experience in education and teen ministry. She has a Master Degree in secondary education. Barb taught in the Rockford Public Schools for thirty four years. During that time she worked in the high schools as a reading diagnostician and therapist. Other duties included the training the high school teachers to work with students that had reading difficulties and rewriting course work to enable disabled reader’s to learn the content that was being taught in mainstream classes. Barb also had the4 joy of being a cheerleading coach for 17 years. (☺)
After retiring from teaching in 2005, Barb began a second career. She ministers in The Salvation Army as the Territorial Director of Youth Ministries and Youth Leader Development Coordinator for the Central Territory (Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Kansas and Nebraska, Iowa) This ministry has allowed her to work with students from the ages of 12-18 and to train the leaders that serve the local corps (churches) throughout the territory. Her ministry includes training leaders in the area of youth ministry and teen discipleship. Barb is also a trainer of The 40 Developmental Assets.
Barb has taught the teens Sunday school class, Bible Studies, led youth groups, served as the Day Camp Director, developed a peer leader program and mentored many students and youth pastors throughout the years.
Barb was involved in the organization of the teen track for a Territorial Bible and Leadership Institute for The Salvation Army. She developed a program to train students as peer leaders in the youth ministry at the local Salvation Army churches.
It is in this setting she uses the Dare 2 Share materials. Students are trained to use the materials and then they turn around and train six to eight students in the Dare 2 Share materials.
Barb has been on the staff of many divisional, territorial and national committees for The Salvation Army. She was instrumental in developing a five year discipleship program for the teens of the Salvation Army. She served of the staff of the National Seminar of Evangelism held at Glenn Eyre, Colorado Springs, for eighteen years where she taught child and teen evangelism.
Barb is a professor at Olivet Nazarene University in The Salvation Army's continuing education department where she teaches evangelism and discipleship.
Barb has been married to Edward Higgins for forty seven years; has two married children, two outstanding “in loves” and six incredible grandchildren.
Her love for God and her love for teens motivate her daily to be a part of the ministry of loving teens into the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. The outcome of her ministry is show today’s teens through the word of God how to become fully devoted followers of the Lord Jesus Christ who with a love and a passion will serve their Lord under the banner of The Salvation Army.
