How to Make Beautiful Music

Understanding the message and meaning of the gospel is mission critical for both you and your students! For how can we explain Jesus’ message to others if we can’t actually articulate it clearly?

That’s why we’ve spent the past seven issues of energize drilling down into the theology of each of the six key stops of the GOSPEL Journey message!

But make no mistake, the GOSPEL acrostic is not an evangelism script or technique. It’s not a method. It’s a message. And once you master it, it enables you to make beautiful music.

Learn the Chords

Think of it this way. Learning the six key truths of the GOSPEL Journey is much like putting in the prep-work needed to play a guitar. First we learn the chords. Chords give us the basics, and as we master them, we can be creative and begin to play our own beautiful music. Similarly, the GOSPEL acrostic provides you and your students the basics needed to share the gospel personally and powerfully. Once we learn the “chords,” we can let the Holy Spirit inspire us as we tell people about the gospel in the midst of genuine, relational, give-and-take conversation.

So assuming you and your students have mastered the content of the GOSPEL, it’s time to make beautiful music by weaving Jesus’ gospel message into real life situations.

Play the Song

There are two primary channels through which this song gets played as a result of your youth ministry—ways by which teenagers will hear the message of the gospel: 1) from you at youth group and 2) from your students in the midst of their relationships. So I’m challenging you to take an honest look at both this week and assess how it’s going. Are you and your students playing this beautiful music as creatively and consistently as you can?

I’d recommend you pull in some of your key adult and student leaders to critically evaluate these two channels and look for areas of improvement and greater effectiveness. Here are a few criteria you might look at:

Weekly Gospel Presentation

There’s no doubt about it, you have the stage when it comes to consistently playing this song at youth group. That’s why I believe it is essential that you give an invitation every week.

On a scale of 1-10, rate each area:

  • Consistency in regularly giving the gospel
  • Clear transitions from the lesson to the gospel
  • Simple and clear explanation of the gospel (i.e., unsaved visitors would understand it the first time)
  • Simple and clear invitation and response to the gospel (i.e. raised hands, fill out card, etc.)
  • Strategic follow up plan for those who responded

Students’ Ability to Share the Gospel

While sharing the gospel weekly at youth group is important, your teenagers really have the lead guitar part when it comes to reaching other teenagers with the gospel at school, on their teams, while hanging with friends or wherever. How are they doing?

On a scale of 1-10, rate each area for clarity and effectiveness:

  • Majority of our group could share the gospel clearly
  • Regular trainings in how to share the gospel
  • Personal challenge to group to follow up meetings with gospel lead in questions (i.e. ‘did what my youth leader say make sense?’)
  • Regular trainings on how to handle common questions about the gospel
  • Students’ level of motivation to share their faith

Going Wide with the Gospel

Acts 19:9-10 serves as a model us.

…He [Paul] took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

We see here that Paul’s “discussions/beautiful music” spread the gospel message throughout an entire province! Not because he talked to everyone himself, but because he inspired those he was teaching to take the message viral.

What could your youth group look like in two years if you and your students consistently play this beautiful music and share the gospel message with the lost?
