How do I get started reaching my campus?
Reaching your campus always starts with prayer. Begin to pray everyday for your campus to be impacted with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Ask God to use you to unite with other Christian students to accomplish this awesome task. Pray that the Lord will begin to prepare the hearts of students, teachers and the administration for revival.
As you pray, ask God to show you what he is already up to on campus. For instance, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) may have a strong huddle group on campus. Or First Priority, Youth Alive, Student Venture, Campus Life or Young Life may have a strong chapter on or near your school. Ask around. Talk to other Christian students who are involved with campus ministries or prayer groups and see where God is at work.
You can also call the local headquarters of any of the above named ministries to find out if anything is happening on your campus. The phone numbers of the local headquarters should be in your phone book. These ministries should also be helpful in answering any questions that you may have as you get involved with reaching your campus for Jesus!
Once you know where God is working on campus...go and join in! Get involved with that campus ministry as soon as possible. Invite your other Christian friends to go. Then, begin to invite your non-Christian friends to go. As your non-Christian friends begin to attend, initiate conversations with them about the message of hope they encountered at the meeting (hopefully the leader gave a clear gospel presentation).
When you invite a non-Christian friend to an outreach meeting make sure that you alert the leader of the meeting so that they will be sure to greet your friend before the meeting starts and give the gospel at some point during the meeting.
The most effective way to communicate the gospel in this culture is through invitational evangelism. Invite your friends to an outreach meeting and share the gospel afterward.
Reaching your campus takes prayer, involvement, action and evangelism. If you are serious about making an impact on your campus, get involved in a campus ministry that is already making a difference!
