You Don't Know Worship!

I'm assuming because you are reading this that you are alive and (hopefully) well on planet earth somewhere.
But why? What I mean is, why didn't God just instantly transport you up to heaven the minute you became a Christian? It's not like it would have been difficult for Him, after all He is God. Wouldn't it have been cool if the second we said "amen" after trusting Christ, we were rocketed straight into the presence of Jesus to spend eternity in paradise?
But we weren't. So in my mind there is a reason we were left down here. God has a purpose for every believer, and contrary to popular opinion, it's not about getting "stuff":
Then Jesus said, "Beware! Don't be greedy for what you don't have. Real life is not measured by how much we own." (Luke 12:15)
He who dies with the most toys...still dies.
It's also not about joining the ranks of the rich and famous. At least that's what Jesus thought:
And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? (Matthew 16:26)
Most importantly, it's not even about you!
Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of God. (I Corinthians 10:31)
We were left on this earth because we have been trusted with the most important mission on earth. We exist to bring glory to God. One meaning of "bringing glory" is "to make heavy", which we would understand as "making famous".
In other words, we live and breathe to make the Famous One famous! This is the way life was designed by the Designer, and if you choose not to accept this mission, your life will self-destruct.
But why wouldn't you choose this mission? By now you should know that money, fame, and selfishness can't bring meaning to life (although many have tried and failed), so what other options do you have? None.
And this is a good thing.
So how do we bring glory to God? By worshipping Him in everything we do. Worship is not a 20-minute singing time on Sunday morning. Worship is a mindset, a way of life, a reason for living.
Most people make this way too complicated. What it comes down to is asking yourself: "is what I am doing/thinking/saying honoring or dishonoring the name of Jesus?" The problem is that we separate our relationship with God from the other parts of our lives. We have our "church/youth group" time, our "friends" time, our "fun" time, etc. all in neat little categories.
But this isn't so neat to the God who died on the cross to purchase our lives with His blood:
You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. (I Corinthians 6:19 -20)
What we need to do is allow God to be a part of everything. Start each day thinking about worship as a way of life. Consider each activity an opportunity to make God's name famous by what you do and say. One of the best ways to do this is to tell others about Jesus. When you identify yourself as a Christian, you'll be amazed how fast you start paying attention to your actions and attitudes.
So the choice is yours. Live life for yourself and be miserable, or live life for Christ and be joyful. None of us knows how many trips we have left around the sun, but I know I'm using mine to bring glory to the Son!
How about you?
Head: What you need to know about this truth
Jesus purchased our lives with His life, therefore we must worship God in everything we do by making His name famous in every area of life.
Heart: What you need to feel about this truth
Humbled. When you really start to get a hold of what Jesus went through for you, why wouldn't you want to honor Him in every area of life? An attitude of humility will help you avoid the prideful lie of Satan that you have the option of leaving Christ out of certain parts of your world.
Hands: What you need to do about this truth
On a piece of paper, write out all the areas of your life like:
School
Friends
Sports
Hobbies
Family
Beside each one, write: "I can worship God in this area by ________________", then go back and fill in the blanks.
For example:
School: I can worship God in this area by doing my best for Him.
Friends: I can worship God in this area by telling them about Christ.
Sports: I can worship God in this area by having a good attitude at practice and at games.
After you are finished, write this verse at the bottom:
Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of God. (I Corinthians 10:31)
Then hang the piece of paper up on your mirror or somewhere you will see it everyday. If you are struggling with what worshipping God in everything you do means, get together with your pastor, youth leader, parent, or mature Christian adult and talk it over.
