We were the kings and queens of promise.
We were the victims of ourselves.
Maybe the children of a lesser God,
Between Heaven and Hell,
Heaven and Hell.*
And we were…did you know that? I know that a large portion of the world believes in a cold and dark theory that humanity owes its existence to a series of random mutations that started in a scummy pond a few gazillion years ago, but there is another possibility that paints a very different picture.
We were the Kings and Queens of promise:
God spoke: "Let us make human beings in our image, make them
reflecting our nature
So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea,
the birds in the air, the cattle,
And, yes, Earth itself,
and every animal that moves on the face of Earth."
God created human beings;
he created them godlike,
Reflecting God's nature.
He created them male and female.
God blessed them:
"Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!
Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air,
for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth" (Genesis 1:26-28).
The Bible teaches us that the chain of our ancestry is not summed up in the idea of “from the goo to the zoo to you.” Here we see a perfect God who hand-sculpted our first parents and breathed an eternal and living soul into their being. Then He charged them with taking care of a beautiful planet that was unmarred and untarnished by all the sin and corruption that has spewed from the human race ever since.
Adam and Eve were truly a King and Queen of promise…
But then, we were the victims of ourselves:
The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves (Genesis 3:6-7).
God created us to be with Him in a perfect paradise, in perfect relationship with Him and with each other. But when Adam and Eve made the selfish and devastating choice to disobey the one simple rule that God required them to keep, the world and everything in it went from life to death.
The King and Queen of promise became the victim to temptation, which is why we are now:
…The children of a lesser god,
Between Heaven and Hell,
Heaven and Hell.*
Perhaps that’s how you sometimes feel? Yes, we are, at the core of our being, creations of God and we reflect His image, but we’ve also created a whole pantheon of ‘lesser gods’ that are worshipped and served in every corner of the planet.
-The lesser god of sex that rewards obedience with an abandoned soul and diseased body.
-The lesser god of money that blesses its devotees with emptiness and an unquenchable thirst for more.
-The lesser god of popularity that produces a harvest of shallow relationships and temporary recognition.
And yes, we are between heaven and hell. In light of eternity, this earthly existence is just a few breaths and trips around the sun, and when the ride ends, you get off at the gates of heaven or the entrance to hell.
Here’s the best news in the universe…God wants all of us to once again become children of promise.
Jesus said:
I am, right now, Resurrection and Life. The one who believes in me, even though he or she dies, will live. And everyone who lives believing in me does not ultimately die at all. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26).
The question Jesus asked then is staring us in the face today. Do you believe He is the Resurrection and the Life? Are you trusting Him as your only hope of salvation when your time between heaven and hell is through?
Into the night
Desperate and broken,
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken.*

Most if not all of your friends are probably aware of the song Kings and Queens, so use it as a springboard to discuss God’s desire to be in relationship with us. Ask them what they think the song is about. Listen to their interpretations first, then share the tie in with the GOSPEL Journey.
Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:12-14).
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9).
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:18-20).
