I feel like I’ll never grow tired of videos featuring the ramblings of people surfacing from dental sedation.  First there was “David after the Dentist,” which has garnered over 111,000,000 views- and still makes me laugh (even though it’s just a teeny bit exploitative - right?).

Chaddy, Wisdom Teeth and Prayer 1And now there’s “Chaddy Wisdom Teeth at Home.”

“Chaddy”- obviously from the name Chad, is nicknamed appropriately to his chatty and affable personality. And the combination of his swollen face, teary eyes, and outpouring of profound blather make for an entertaining five minutes.

Here are a few highlights:

“Look at my tongue. Is it numb?”

“How do you say ‘Czechoslovakia’ in Russia? They’re bad people, huh?”

“If you want you can get me a Smoothie King, but don’t spend lots of money because we need to save our money for the Great Depression. Why are you laughing at me?”

The ancient Greeks had a saying - “in vino veritas” - which translated means “with wine there is truth.”  In other words, some chemicals function as a truth serum, and Chaddy’s anesthesia definitely has him swimming at the deep end of the honesty pool!

And for me, his soul baring is where the magic of this video exists.  How many teenagers are willing to admit that mom really does know best??? And what is even more touching is the easy going conversation Chaddy has with his dad:

“Hi Dad I love you!” his heart cries out. “I don't know how I'm doing. I'm just crying and watching soccer and Mom won't give me Panda so I have to eat ice cream - which is really good! Are you gonna come home soon to see me?”

Chaddy, Wisdom Teeth and Prayer 2Is there anyone out there who wouldn’t want to have an easy going, laid back, hassle free conversation with your dad?  Perhaps it was Chaddy’s looped out state that created those conditions, but it seems like there was a deeper connection between him and his father that the drugs only amplified.

As I reflected on this viral video, a thought occurred to me.  Isn’t Chaddy’s chat with his dad a perfect picture of prayer?  No seriously - this is a great reminder that when we go to our Father as His children, we are entitled to an easy going, laid back, hassle free exchange - no drugs required!

And of course this was modeled by Jesus, who knows the Father better than anyone in the universe:

After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone (Matthew 14:23).

While it was still night, way before dawn, he got up and went out to a secluded spot and prayed (Mark 1:37).

But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer (Luke 5:16).

One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night (Luke 6:12).

Are you getting the idea here that just maybe Jesus was fond of talking to His Father? I can just picture our Savior if He had just had His wisdom teeth removed - you know He would have gone straight to His Papa and talked about the experience!

And if Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, second Person of the Trinity needed a constant convo with God the Father…what does that say to us?

I’ll tell you what it says.  We need to talk to our Father, who is in heaven, but also is closer than our next breath.  We need to grab our spiritual phone called prayer and pour out our heart and emotions to the One who cares more about us than we do ourselves! Chaddy, Wisdom Teeth and Prayer 3

Don’t we make prayer waaaaaay too complicated? But now you know that your true Father is anxiously waiting to converse with His beloved child, no matter what your state of mind or emotions happen to be.  You can talk to Him when you are up, down, or even sideways with a swollen face and teary eyes-

“Hi Dad I love you!” your heart can cry out. “I don't know how I'm doing. I'm just crying and watching soccer and life is giving me lemons so You can make lemonade out of it - which is really good! Is Jesus gonna return soon so I can see You?”

And, like a viral video, we should be spreading the incredible message that because of Jesus, we can have a restored and personal relationship with the Father.  All human hearts cry out for their Dads, and the Lord’s sacrifice made it possible for us to come home to our Father.

Let’s get “chatty” about THE Cause!
