What if one day you got an e-mail from God? I don't think you'd wait long to read it! That's probably not going to happen- but let's pretend one day you opened up your inbox and found this:
From: God (AlmightyRuler@God.net)
To: Christian Teen (you@ChristianTeen.net)
Subject: Me
Greetings! I know this e-mail is probably a bit of a surprise, but I know that you have been struggling lately with the whole deal on WHO I AM and WHAT I AM LIKE. It gets even more confusing when you have all kinds of folks with all kinds of opinions about me who have never even read my book!
Anyway, I wanted to give a quick rundown about ME to get you started. After all, the more you know about someone, the better the relationship gets, right?
First of all, you need to know that I am love (I John 4:8, 16). Not the earthly kind that is fickle or temporary. I am true love defined.
Now on to the other important facts about Me. I have no beginning, nor will I ever have an ending (Deut 33:27). I know everything (Psalm 139:-16), I exist everywhere (Psalm 139:7), and I am all-powerful (Revelation 19:6).
Being all powerful is sort of important as far as being God, because if someone or something else were more powerful than Me, I wouldn't really be God! Which leads me to the other facts about Me that are a basic part of being God…I am perfect (Matthew 5:48) and holy (Isaiah 6:1-8). In other words, there is no fault in Me, nor will there ever be. I am completely separate from all creation, and I cannot sin.
Now that you know a little about Me, let me let you in on what I am like. Because I am a person, I think and feel. I experience every emotion you can think of, plus some that you probably can't. Because I am holy, I can't stand sin. It destroys my creation and the lives of my created ones. Because I am love, I have no other choice or desire but to seek the highest good for all that I have made- which is why I came to earth, lived a perfect life among you, died a horrible death because of you, and rose from the dead to save you (John 3:16). If you forget everything else, please remember that.
There are so many other things I want you to know about me, so please take time to deepen our relationship by reading My Word. In the meantime, please know that my thoughts towards you are more than the grains of sand on all the shores in all the earth.
Your Friend,
God.
God.
That simple three letter word can bring up millions of complex images, thoughts, and feelings.
Put the word "God" in a search engine and you will get literally millions of returns.
The dictionary defines God as "the Being perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness who is worshiped as creator and ruler of the universe."
Britney Spears defines God as "an old man with a long white beard (who) wanders around."
Maybe God is just whatever you think. Except what you believe about God just might be one of the most important things about you. Your definition of God defines nearly everything in your life. Even not believing in God is a belief that influences how you live.
So instead of looking up God on the internet, in the dictionary, or in the mind of Britney Spears, maybe we should ask God about who He is. You see, God gave us the Bible so we wouldn't have to wander around wondering if God just wanders around wondering who He is.
A complete Bible study of who God is and what He is like is a lifetime journey, and as the old saying goes - "the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." So let's take our first step and fuel our soul!
Head: What you need to know about this truth
God is a holy, perfect, loving, eternal, personal Being who is all powerful, all knowing, and who exists everywhere. He came to earth as Jesus, lived a perfect life, died a horrible death, and came back from the dead to give eternal life to those who trust Him as their only hope of salvation.
Heart: What you need to feel about this truth
Write a letter/e-mail back to God in response to what you have learned. Be sure to include the things from who He is and what He is like that mean the most to you. Also, express your specific thanks to God this week during worship for who He is and what He is like.
Hands: What you need to do about this truth
Think of at least one non-Christian person you could talk to this week about God. Set up a time and a place to chat, and get his/her thoughts on who God is and what He is like. After listening to his/her thoughts, tell them what you have learned from God's e-mail and share the Gospel Journey. Check out the Gospel Journey webpage for help.
