Why does anyone take their first drink or drag? Surely people don't think "I want to get addicted, so Im going to start ___ing " Often times the thought is "Oh, its not going to become a habit."
When tobacco companies start making cigarettes that have added flavor to 'add to' the sensation (or mask the bad stuff) one begins to wonder. What is the ultimate reason behind using any habit forming substance? Although smoking may not be evidence for feeling a lack of purpose in life, but as a teen there are so many pressures to fit in to the right group, do the cool thing, or find fulfillment through something that perhaps the reason behind the ryhme shows more evidence than one thinks.
Substance abuse or finding fulfillment through the wrong things may in fact be because of feeling like one lacks purpose. Perhaps some teens resorting to alcohol use or cigarettes are in fact using them to fulfill something else missing in their life. The question to ask your teen is Why they are smoking, drinking, etc? Is it because it helps define who they are? Why did they start in the first place?
