How to Share Your Faith Using The Fray's How To Save A Life

How To Save A Life, The Fray's current hit song, has been on the Hot 100 chart for 33 weeks now and is still sitting at #5!! The song was inspired by one of the band member's experiences while working as a mentor at a summer camp for troubled teens. Isaac Slade, the group's singer and pianist, found himself challenged at the camp, trying to reach out to a 17 year old who was struggling with alcohol and drugs.

This powerful song is Slade's effort to spread the call to reach out to those who are hurting and making poor choices that inevitable take them down a path to even more hurt. Check out this link to listen to the band's description of the story behind How To Save A Life. In the video Slade describes the trouble teen he was paired with, saying,

"...All he wanted was somebody to come alongside him and be a friend, a helper, like a companion almost, just somebody on his same team..."

Do you have people in your life who are lost and hurting? Friends who need you to come alongside and introduce them to the Ultimate Friend and Companion - Jesus? Friends who need to hear about the love and grace God is holding out to them as a free gift? Maybe your friends aren't as troubled as the teen that inspired The Fray's song, but every single human being is carrying baggage around that hurts. And if they are walking through life without a relationship with God, they have a 'God-shaped hole' in their souls that can never be filled up by popularity or stuff or alcohol or whatever else they might be trying to fill it with.

So how do you help your friends who need to hear about God's love and gift of salvation? The lyrics to How To Save A Life can point you in the right direction - as the first line of the song says, "Step one you say we need to talk..." Sometimes the toughest thing about sharing your faith is just bringing God up in conversation. But if you pray and then have the eyes to see it, God will send you opportunities to bring him up in your conversations.

The song's lyrics go on to say:

Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you

There's truth in these words. Because you have a relationship with the God of the Universe, you do know the BEST thing in the world -something that your friend needs to know about too! Lay out the message of God's gift of salvation to your friend and "pray to God he hears you." If you need help explaining God's gift, check out the GOSPEL Journey.

So next time you hear How To Save A Life playing, use it to bring God up in the conversation! You could save a life for eternity!
