How to Share Your Faith Using Mute Math's Chaos

Chaos. A condition or place of great disorder or confusion. Teens can identify with the word. Whether it's descriptive of your room, your social life, your locker or your soul, it communicates feeling out of control.

Mute Math's new song Chaos, recently featured on the Late, Late Show and made available to fans as a free download on the band's myspace site, might also describe Mute Math's music label struggles. They've split with their label, disputing their branding in the music market as a 'Christian band', insistent that although all the band members are Christians, they want their music to be positioned for mainstream exposure, without the 'Christian' label. The subsequent buzz from the dispute has created its own set of positives and negatives for Mute Math.

Have you ever experienced people shoving you into a 'Christian slot' once they hear the label 'Christian' attached to you? 'Christian' pulls up a lot of different images for different people, both positive and negative. Most people come to the table with preconceived judgments when they hear the word. So as you strive to live out an authentic Christian walk as a follower of Jesus, realize how important it is that you demonstrate to those around you, through both words and actions, what it really means to be a Christ follower. To help break through the stereotypes, seek out real conversations about the things in life that really matter!

As you look for ways to talk with your friends about spiritual things, Mute Math's song Chaos can help. Everyone longs for an anchor of stability in the midst of the chaos of life and the uncertainties the future holds. Check out these lyrics from the song:

Complication's my claim to fame
And I can't believe there's another
Constantly just another
Can't avoid, what I can't control
And I'm losing ground, still I can't stand down
Yeah I know, yeah I know, yeah

I know you stay true when my world is false
Everything around's breakin' down to chaos
I always see you when my sight is lost
Everything around's breakin' down to chaos

It's hard to trust anyone again
After all the letdowns I've been through
Haunted by what I've been through
Best to try while I still can breathe
and I'm screaming out give me hope somehow
And I know, yeah I know, yeah

Try asking your friends some of the following questions to get the conversation started:

  • What do you do when your life feels like chaos-when it's out of control? Share about your 'steadfast source of security'.
  • Do you worry about the future? What gives you hope? Who do you trust and turn to when you're down? Describe how God's word helps you know how to handle anxiety and feeling down. Check out Prov. 3:5-8 and Ps. 42:5.
  • When people hear the word 'Christian' what do they think of? Is it positive or negative, or a mix of both? What do you think of? This may open the doors to some interesting spiritual conversations about what it really means to be a follower of Jesus.

Chaos is a condition of life. And everyone longs for an anchor that will 'stay true...when everything around's breakin' down to chaos'. When God's your security in the midst of life's chaos, you shouldn't hesitate to share the Good News with your friends!
