How to Share Your Faith Using Get Smart

From James Bond to Mission Impossible, the secret weapons of espionage field agents have long intrigued movie goers. Comedy spy spoof Get Smart feeds that intrigue with its crime-fighting arsenal of gadgets and gizmos. Based on the 1960's comedy TV series, be warned that Get Smart hits the big screen with even more satire and crude humor than the original version.

The original show actually brought the FBI calling, concerned about a leak in their ranks, since some of the devices developed for the show apparently came a little too close to the FBI's espionage reality. Just as the infamous 'shoe phone' pushed the technological envelope back in the 60's when mobile communications were only a dream, the 2008 version of Get Smart introduces viewers to a new cache of weapons. This time around Maxwell Smart's spy agency CONTROL's extensive list of tools of the trade, include: a radiation detection wristwatch, explosive dental floss, cufflink bombs and an over-the-top Swiss Army knife.

Have you ever wished you had your own stash of secret weapons to pull out in time of need? As a Christian committed to sharing your faith with others, you might be surprised to learn that the Bible says you actually do have your own cache of secret weapons at your disposal. Check out 2 Corinthians 10:3-5:

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

What are these spiritual weapons? Author Greg Stier identifies them in his book Dare 2 Share. Your seven secret weapons are:

  • Every human's inner knowledge of God (Romans 1:18-22).
  • Each individual's personal conscience (Romans 2:14-15).
  • The power of the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12-13).
  • The power of the Gospel message (Romans 1:16).
  • The power of prayer (Colossians 4:3).
  • A life of doing good (Matthew 5:15-16).
  • Your love for other Christians (John 13:35).1

So draw upon your spiritual weapons and seek out an opportunity to bring God up in conversation with your unreached friends. You might even consider using Get Smart as angle for spiritual conversation. Here are some ideas that might help you broach the topic:

  • Maxwell Smart sports a radiation-detector wristwatch. Have you ever experienced a situation where your own personal 'advance warning system' went off? Have you ever experienced a circumstance where you relied on your 'intuition'?
  • Do you think there's such a thing as 'spiritual intuition'? A sense in your spirit that something is right or wrong? True or false? Listen, then share what the Bible has to say in Romans 2:14-15 about our personal conscience.
  • The shoe phone is back. Is mobile communication on a physical level in any way similar to prayer communication on a spiritual level? Find out if your friends believe in the power of prayer? Share from your personal experience the role prayer plays in your life.

Seek to use your spiritual weapons wisely. They have the power to turn your world upside down!
